What A Man Can Do – Album Review

“There is nothing missing from this recording. It’s bathed in lush, elaborate arrangements of strings and horns that make each song sound like a million bucks” [but] “the element that ultimately sets Anthony apart is a staggeringly high and powerful tenor range that dwarfs the vocal potency of his stylistic mentors.”

I was 35 and didn’t have a lot to show for my stint in the music business. There were a few exciting opportunities and collaborations but ultimately, nothing worked out. Professionally, I was ready to give up.

For whatever reason, maybe the stars were aligned, I decided one day that I needed to leave behind music I was proud of. I got reacquainted with my purpose, dusted off a few songs I had written and penned a couple more in the hopes of having a collection that reflected me as an artist.

9 of the ten songs on ‘What A Man Can Do’ were rooted in experiences both personal and professional. I wanted one cover to round out the 10-song compilation but it was a challenge as I have so many influences. ‘Prisoner’, recorded by Barbra Streisand as the love theme from the cult film ‘The Eyes Of Laura Mars’, was my choice. It was emotional, powerful and felt right. The arrangement  on my album  drifted from the original with an added bridge and guitar solo.  It also started an octave lower for dramatic effect before returning to Barbra’s original key.

I found a great producer (Frank Verderosa) and studio in NYC where I would  travel to from the ‘burbs 2 or 3 times a month for about a year. The process was so enjoyable and rewarding as the songs of ‘What A Man Can Do’ came alive. World-class musicians and fantastic vocalists, under the direction of my co-producer, resulted in an album that truly represents me.

Hope you enjoy the music.

All the Best,
John
